BRNO OSSUARY UNDER JAKUBSKÉ NÁMĚSTÍ

Investor/Contracting Authority: Statutory City of Brno

Project description:
The aim of this project was to open to public the extensive historical ossuary located under the square and the premises of the church of St. Jakub. This monument is located in a protected monument zone. The structure is divided into four sections. The entrance structure consisting of a staircase, covered on the south side by a stone wall from Božanov sandstone, founded on a reinforced-concrete foundation. The entrance hall is a newly created underground space of the ossuary, an insulated reinforced-concrete room with an entrance staircase - a space delimited by the foundation masonry of the church and the reinforced-concrete wall adjacent to the ossuary chamber of the historic ossuary. This area houses the operation and technical facilities.

The exhibition consists of assemblies of human remains placed around the perimeter of the walls and in the crypt area. In the middle chamber, there is a contemplative space with equipment and attributes evoking the impression of a chapel for occasional funeral masses - a cross, a statue of a pieta, an ambon, a row of candlesticks. The entire exhibition is also equipped with information boards with a description of exhibits and archives, documenting the history of the St. Jakub's cemetery and church. The walls between the buildings are fitted with newly restored tombstones. This whole work is illuminated in variable light intensity and equipped with a sound system.

Part of the construction modifications was the distribution of high current, low current - a camera system, sound system, security alarm, air conditioning, and sanitary installations. All network distributions are laid in the floors.
